Burnout: Let’s Talk About It
If you are reading this, I imagine you are an ambitious teen with big dreams to attend prestigious universities or simply achieve the best grades you can. These are admirable goals, but they come with a hefty toll: burnout.
Coping with burnout is a crucial skill for any hardworking individual striving for success. The pressure to excel academically, socially, and in extracurricular activities can lead to overwhelming stress. Here are some strategies to manage burnout effectively:
Prioritize self-care
It is easy to put your foot on the gas and forget to stop, breathe, and give rest to the body that works. Engaging in regular physical activity and ensuring high-quality sleep are foundational aspects of health, which can boost energy levels and improve your mood.
Next, time management
Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and use tools such as planners to stay organized. Setting realistic goals can prevent feeling overwhelmed and inadequate if you fail to achieve your goals. This is not to say do not challenge yourself- shoot for the moon! However, be pragmatic in your aspirations and treat yourself with kindness.
Finally, establish boundaries
Learn to communicate what you can and cannot fit on your plate. Saying no to unnecessary commitments can save you from unwanted stress and anxiety. Practice mindfulness in every aspect of your life, especially professionally.
As an ambitious individual, a support system is essential whether you are coping with burnout or not. Reach out to friends and family for support, or alternatively, contact a school counsellor for further assistance with your feelings of burnout. Connecting with others can provide fresh perspectives and emotional relief. I hope this small insight may help alleviate some of that dreaded burnout.
